Deep learning refers to artificial neural networks that have the ability to estimate various functions based on the analysis of all the data input received. This is a kind of a hierarchical progression in artificial intelligence where the networks obtain more knowledge without needing any predefined rules programmed into it. In layman terms, the computers are programmed with an algorithm that teaches it how to study information and then use that information to solve problems. This technology can be seen in a vast amount of software applications which require the computer to solve problems automatically for the user.

The complexity of deep learning is trending like crazy because of all the information that gets distributed these days. The architecture of neural networks has to be made much larger than it did previously in order to analyze the information accurately. There are already innovations in the works that would allow computers to have their own seeing and hearing capabilities. If you have ever seen the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” then you will know what this means. Imagine a computer with a robotic eyeball-like camera that can actually understand what it is seeing. How about computers that can recognize someone’s voice and have real conversations that are not scripted? This is the kind of deep learning that computer systems and applications will likely have in the next 5-10 years.

The pharmaceutical industry is also benefiting from deep learning technology. After all, the one worry that pharmaceutical companies have is that their medications could have so unexpected toxic effects on a patient or with other nutrients that a patient has consumed. Deep learning technology is allowing scientific researchers to study the toxic effects of certain medications before releasing them to the general public. This type of screening is said to be the most accurate and should help make patients aware of how they can expect to feel when taking certain medications.

The advertising industry has used deep learning to understand the types of products and services that people purchase, especially on the internet. This allows companies to advertise products or services to people based on their past interests and searches. That way they’ll more likely be interested in the products they see advertised and less likely to click off of it. Search engines and social media networks use deep learning technology the most. Other commerce websites such as eBay are using similar deep learning tools as well.
